A Bad Day at Lake Allatoona
Is still a better day than at Work Day!

Well, the boat has been in the water all summer and I still had not gone out on her, so I decided to take my two sons for a "Boys' Day Out" on the Lake. To make it official I wore my "Trailer Sailor" T-shirt and my "Trailer Sailor" hat (the originals). That is me to the left.

The crew worked to put all of my "stuff" into the cabin. My oldest son, Matthew, opened the hatch to start putting our things into the cabin and a wasp flew out and stung him. He took it as a personal challenge to get the fly swatter and kill anything that flew. The local ducks stayed away from him.

My little experiment using sponges in the openings of the hatch did not keep the wasps out. Well, on to plan "B".

As you can see, my youngest son, Andrew, is very safety conscious because he has his life vest on. My older son would not put his on until I quit taking pictures.

After the photo session, we all got on the boat and I cranked up the 6 HP Yamaha. She started on the second pull. I then had my boys cast off the lines while I put her in reverse to back out of the slip.

Only problem was, it wouldn't go into reverse. The gear shift handle was frozen.

I noticed that we were drifting away from the dock, so I decided to put her in forward and go back to the dock to see what the problem was....Wrong. The motor wouldn't go into forward either and we were drifting further away.

While I was thinking someone might have to go swimming, my youngest son, took the boat hook and caught the last post on the dock and pulled us in.

After we tied her up, I spent the next hour in 100 degree heat, trying to free the gear shift lever, teaching my boys a new vocabulary while I was doing it. I finally called it a day and apologized to them and asked them to "pack" it up.

They said that although they would have liked to have gone sailing, it was still a great day to them, because they spent it with their dad.

"A bad day on Lake Allatoona is still a better day than a work day."
